How to Practice Self-Forgiveness | Release Guilt & Regret

How to Practice Self-Forgiveness | Release Guilt & Regret

Elevate And Align |

We all have moments we wish we could change.

Maybe it was something you said, a decision you made, a relationship you stayed in too long, an opportunity you let pass by, or simply a time in your life when you wish you had known then what you know now.

Looking back can help us learn and grow. But when reflection turns into repeatedly criticizing ourselves for the past, guilt and regret can become incredibly heavy things to carry.

Self-forgiveness isn't about pretending something never happened or deciding that our choices didn't matter. It's about acknowledging the past, learning what we can from it, and giving ourselves permission to move forward.

You are allowed to grow beyond an earlier version of yourself.

Why Is It So Hard to Forgive Ourselves?

Interestingly, many of us offer other people far more compassion than we offer ourselves.

When someone we love makes a mistake, we can usually recognize the circumstances surrounding it. We understand that they were hurting, overwhelmed, afraid, inexperienced, or simply doing the best they could with what they knew at the time.

But when we look at our own mistakes?

That compassion can disappear.

Instead, the inner critic takes over:

I should have known better.

Why did I do that?

I can't believe I allowed that to happen.

If only I had made a different choice.

The problem with constantly replaying the past is that we're often judging our former selves with knowledge and perspective we didn't have at the time.

Growth changes us. Experience changes us.

The fact that you would make a different choice today may actually be evidence of how much you've grown.

What Self-Forgiveness Really Means

Forgiving yourself doesn't require forgetting the past.

It doesn't mean avoiding responsibility, excusing harmful behavior, or pretending painful experiences didn't matter.

Self-forgiveness is about reaching a point where you can say:

I acknowledge what happened. I accept that I cannot change it. I choose to learn from it rather than continue punishing myself for it.

There may be lessons worth carrying forward.

The punishment doesn't have to come with you.

When guilt, shame, or regret resurfaces, try asking yourself:

Is there something I still need to learn or repair from this experience, or am I simply continuing to punish myself?

Those are two very different things.

If there is an action you can take, take it when appropriate. If there is a lesson to learn, carry that wisdom forward.

But if you've already learned the lesson, perhaps what remains isn't something you need to solve.

Perhaps it's something you're finally ready to release.

4 Crystals for Self-Forgiveness & Emotional Healing

Crystals can be beautiful companions during moments of reflection, meditation, Reiki, journaling, or quiet self-care. For my recent Reiki for Self-Forgiveness session, I chose four crystals with energies that complement different parts of the forgiveness journey.

Red Jasper — Grounding & Emotional Strength

Self-forgiveness can bring difficult memories and emotions to the surface, which is why grounding can be an important place to begin.

Red Jasper is known for grounding, emotional strength, stability, and courage. Its steady energy can be a reminder that healing doesn't require perfection. Sometimes it simply requires the willingness to take the next step.

Hold Red Jasper while taking several slow breaths and bring your attention back to the present moment.

The past has already happened.

Right now, you are here.

Affirmation: I am grounded, safe, and supported. I have the strength to forgive myself with compassion.

Rhodonite — Compassion & Forgiveness

Rhodonite is especially beautiful for work centered around forgiveness and the heart.

Often associated with compassion, forgiveness, emotional healing, and unconditional love, Rhodonite encourages us to extend some of the kindness we so readily give to other people back toward ourselves.

When you notice harsh self-talk appearing, imagine speaking to yourself the way you would speak to someone you deeply love.

Would you tell them they should spend the rest of their life suffering because of one mistake?

Probably not.

You deserve compassion too.

Affirmation: I forgive myself with love and understanding. I choose compassion over self-criticism.

Que Sera — Acceptance, Trust & Moving Forward

There comes a point in healing when we have to acknowledge something difficult:

We cannot change what has already happened.

Que Sera encourages acceptance, trust, resilience, and the courage to move forward.

Acceptance doesn't mean you have to like what happened. It simply means recognizing that fighting against a past you cannot change keeps part of your energy anchored there.

Instead, you can ask:

What can this experience teach me about the person I want to be moving forward?

Let the past become wisdom rather than a permanent residence.

Affirmation: I release what I cannot change with grace. I move forward with hope, wisdom, and an open heart.

Peace Jade — Inner Peace & Emotional Balance

After reflection and release comes something we sometimes forget to allow ourselves:

Peace.

Peace Jade offers gentle, soothing energy associated with harmony and emotional balance. It can be especially supportive when you're working on quieting the inner critic and replacing judgment with understanding.

You don't have to keep reopening an old wound to prove that you've learned from it.

You can remember.

You can grow.

And you can still choose peace.

Affirmation: I am at peace with myself. My heart is calm, balanced, and filled with compassion.

A Simple Self-Forgiveness Practice

Find somewhere comfortable where you can have a few quiet minutes. If you have one of the crystals above, hold it in your hand or place it nearby.

Take a slow breath in.

Exhale gently.

Then ask yourself:

What am I still holding against myself?

Don't judge whatever comes up. Simply notice it.

Now ask:

What have I learned because of this experience?

Think about who you were then and who you are today.

What do you understand now that you didn't understand before?

What boundaries have you developed?

What strength did you discover?

What would you do differently?

Then take another slow breath and remind yourself:

I am allowed to learn without punishing myself forever.

Imagine placing the experience behind you—not erasing it, but allowing it to become part of your story rather than something that controls your present.

Self-Forgiveness Affirmations

Affirmations can be especially powerful when repeated slowly during meditation, Reiki, journaling, or before sleep.

Choose whichever feels most meaningful to you today:

I release the weight of my past with love.

Every new moment is an opportunity to begin again.

I forgive myself with love and understanding.

I choose compassion over self-criticism.

I release what I cannot change with grace.

I gently release the burdens that no longer belong to me.

I deserve love, healing, and inner harmony.

I am worthy of love, healing, and new beginnings.

You don't have to believe every affirmation completely the first time you say it.

Sometimes healing begins simply by becoming willing to believe it could someday be true.

Reiki for Self-Forgiveness

If you're working through guilt, regret, shame, or difficulty forgiving yourself, I recently created a gentle Reiki for Self-Forgiveness session to support you through this process.

During the session, we work with Red Jasper, Rhodonite, Que Sera, and Peace Jade, along with calming Reiki and a gentle feather sweep to symbolically release lingering guilt, regret, and self-criticism.

The intention is not to erase the past.

It's to help you create space for compassion, acceptance, peace, and the freedom to move forward.

You can return to the session whenever you find yourself replaying old mistakes or simply need a gentle reminder to treat yourself with the same kindness you so willingly offer to others.

Give Yourself Permission to Move Forward

Healing doesn't always happen in one dramatic moment.

Sometimes it's quieter than that.

It's catching yourself when the inner critic starts speaking and choosing a kinder thought.

It's remembering something painful without allowing it to define you.

It's accepting that you made the best choices you could with the person you were and the knowledge you had at that moment.

And sometimes it's simply deciding:

I've carried this long enough.

Your past is part of your story, but it doesn't have to determine the rest of it.

Take the lessons.

Keep the wisdom.

Give yourself permission to release the rest.

You are still growing. You are still becoming. And every new moment offers another opportunity to begin again.

With Love,

Peggy & Loki
