Last week, we discussed anxiety and PTSD, and I wanted to expand on ways to cope with anxiety. One strategy that has made a significant difference in my life is stepping outside of my comfort zone.


Anxiety often makes me hesitant to participate in activities, and I find myself overthinking and stressing about them beforehand. However, I’ve noticed that when I push myself to go out - even if I initially dread it - I usually end up enjoying the experience far more than expected. I can’t count the number of times I’ve looked back and thought, “That was way better than I imagined.”

The reality is that sometimes we have to challenge ourselves to engage with life, even when it feels daunting. This approach not only helps with anxiety but applies to many aspects of life.

For example, when I was 40, I finally pursued my dream of going to college - something I had always wanted but allowed fear to hold me back. One day, a friend and I were talking about it, and out of nowhere, she picked up the phone and scheduled an admissions appointment for me. At first, I was really upset she had done that, but in hindsight, I’m incredibly grateful.

I ended up graduating with honors with an associate degree in Human Services (social work), and becoming the first person in my family to attend college. Not only was it a fulfilling achievement, but I also had an amazing time throughout the journey—no regrets at all.


So, let’s talk more about stepping out of your comfort zone. It might feel scary, but the rewards can be life-changing.

Doubt creeps in when you attempt something unfamiliar. The mind can create countless reasons to stay where things feel safe. Identify negative thoughts and replace them with empowering affirmations. Having a network of supportive friends, mentors, or coaches can make stepping out easier. Surround yourself with people who inspire you to grow and encourage your ambitions. Sometimes, a little encouragement is all it takes to push forward.
