When we hear the words self-care, it's easy to picture long bubble baths, expensive spa days, elaborate morning routines, or perfectly planned wellness rituals.
While those things can absolutely be forms of self-care, taking care of yourself doesn't always have to be complicated.
Sometimes, self-care is simply choosing joy on purpose.
The Little Things Matter
Joy doesn't always arrive in big, life-changing moments. More often, it quietly shows up in the small things we might easily overlook.
It might be finding a $5 crystal that seems to call your name.
Enjoying a favorite treat without feeling guilty about it.
Sitting near a window and watching the birds.
Feeling the sun on your face.
Playing a game that makes you completely lose track of time.
Listening to music, working with your plants, laughing at something silly, or simply giving yourself permission to do absolutely nothing for a little while.
These moments may seem small, but small moments of joy still matter.
Self-Care Doesn't Have to Be Productive
We live in a world that often makes us feel like everything we do needs to accomplish something.
Even self-care can start to feel like another item on the to-do list.
Meditate for twenty minutes.
Drink enough water.
Exercise.
Journal.
Practice gratitude.
Get enough sleep.
All of these things can be beneficial, but self-care shouldn't become another reason to feel like you're falling behind.
Sometimes, the most loving thing you can do for yourself is stop asking, “What should I be doing?” and instead ask, “What would bring me a little joy right now?”
Give Yourself Permission to Enjoy Life
You don't need a special reason to do something that makes you smile.
You don't have to earn a quiet afternoon.
You don't have to justify buying yourself a small treat.
You don't have to turn every hobby into a side hustle, every walk into a workout, or every peaceful moment into a spiritual practice.
Sometimes, you can simply enjoy something because it makes you happy.
That is enough.
Choose Joy on Purpose
This Self-Care Saturday, I encourage you to look for one small thing that brings you joy.
It doesn't need to cost money.
It doesn't need to take all day.
It doesn't need to make sense to anyone else.
Choose the crystal.
Eat the cake.
Watch the birds.
Play the game.
Sit in the sunshine.
Laugh loudly.
Rest when you need to.
Self-care doesn't always have to be a routine, a ritual, or something carefully scheduled.
Sometimes, it's simply allowing yourself to enjoy the little things without guilt.
With that said, this girl is about to go play my Zelda game, eat some cheesecake and have some me time.
What small thing brings you joy?
